As a follow-up to our earlier information on the pigeon rota virus outbreak, we have made contact with Colin Walker, an Avian Vet in Melbourne. He has advised us that AgriBio is currently investigating what other species, if any , can be infected by Rota. Anecdotal evidence suggests that the virus can infect other birds and that these birds can spread the virus either without showing symptoms or only mild symptoms. It is possible that this group could include ducks. As testing continues AgriBio will make the results available.
As shows are undertaken throughout the State in the near future, clubs and exhibitors should be vigilant with regards to biosecurity to help avoid the spread of this disease in Queensland.
